Match Report: UKC (M) 5 - 0 STU(M)---Round 3 ACAA

The men's Blue Devils rolled to another easy victory on Saturday, scoring 5 goals for the second time in four days against St. Thomas.

This time, they didn't give up a goal, though, after conceding an own goal against NSAC on Wednesday in a 5-2 win.

It was the second half which again gave Kings' their win, as they scored 4 of their 5 in the second frame.

Sam Karkilins started the scoring off in the 30th with a brilliant stepover to fool Tommies' 'keeper Aaron Ahier, before rolling his shot home as Brendan Wile tried to block it.

Then Neil MacIntyre entered the game in the second half, taking up a wing position.

The usually defensive player made an immediate impact in the 52nd minute, taking down a long diagonal pass with a deft first touch and striking a curler into the bottom corner with his second.

In the 54th minute, he did it again. Again a masterful touch set his shot and this time he fooled Ahier by pulling across the net and finding the side netting, to put Kings' 3-0 up.

The game began to get chippy and four yellow cards were handed out in the last 30 minutes and a few more might have been given by a stricter referee.

Mark Higgins scored a header in the 80th minute, off a MacIntyre cross. Then Michael Curci scored another header in the 90th to make it 5-0.

"The STU team, if we were to face them in the semi-final or the final, they wouldn't play like they did tonight," said coach C.J. Young. "They'd play more gritty. They're not really trying to show themselves. A lot of teams do that. Where in the league they won't show their strengths, they'll just sort of coast through and hope they make the playoffs and surprise other teams."

Match Report: UKC (W) 1 - 0 STU (W)---Round 3 ACAA

The Kings' Blue Devils got a win on Saturday, but they missed a number of easy chances against St. Thomas.

Irene Flatley, though, managed to snag a winner in the 71st minute.

"The scoreline should have been four or five-nil," said Blue Devil's coach Stacey Stocco. "But you don't finish your chances you're given, you end up with a 1-0 result, which, you know, I'm not complaining. It's a win."

Flatley was at the heart of a lot of chances, using her pace to get onto long passes. She struggled at times to finish, though, and had difficulty getting it by Tommies' 'keeper Sarah Wardell.

She also won a number of free kicks, giving Kelly Cousens a chance to test Wardell in the 23rd minute. Cousens sent her shot over Wardell and off the bar, though.

After 71 minutes, Flatley managed to score, rounding Jessica Bruce and rolling her shot low past Wardell for a 1-0 lead.

Cousens then hit the bar again in the 77th minute, with a wonderful curling shot that deserved a goal.

Stocco employed a 3-5-2 formation all game, using Sarah Kraus as the lone true centre-back, and moving Cousens higher, into an attacking midfield role. It marks a change from Gillian Costelo's 4-1-4-1 system last year.

St. Thomas had almost no offensive pressure and Krista Bishop had a quiet night for Kings'. Although she commanded her box well and gathered several crosses, she was never tested with a shot.

As it Happened: University of Kings' College Blue Devils v. St. Thomas Tommies---Round 3 (ACAA)

Hi, here are the teams. Don't you hate interviews that take too long?

UKC: Pyne, Straatof, Poulton, possibly Downes, Wallingford, Peacock, Kovacevic, Burleton, Boudreau, Parsley, Karkilins.

STU: Ahier, Higgins, Wile, Noel, Blizzard, Gregory, LaBrech, Olaya, Greer, Steeves. That's only 10, but I can't find the last guy.

1min: Parsley fires inches wide as I try to figure the teams out.

5min: Kings' get a corner and Parsley puts it off the bar. STU struggle to clear, but do.

9min: Karkilins streaks in and rounds Ahier, but Wile slides and clears off the line.

14min: Parsley gets bookedfor arguing a nothing foul.

15min: Parsley is dropped in the box with a really hard--and firmly illegal--challenge. No penalty. Maybe the ref remembered Parsley? Maybe?

20min: Karkilins gets on the end of a long throw and puts his cross out of play.

21min: Karkilins gets in behind but he's whistled for a shoulder barge initiated by the defender. How strange.

24min: A STU free kick floats past three waiting heads, none of whom can put it in. Kings' were lucky and Pyne might want to advise his back line next time.

28min: Wallingford with some good defending down the right, with Higgins pounding towards him. Excellent poise from the rookie.

30min: GOAL! More pace from Karkilins, who runs onto a long ball, pulls a brilliant step-over to fool Ahier and rolls in, this time before Wile can slide it clear, although he tried and nearly made it.

32min: Kovacevic with a some excellent control, but it's deflected wide.

37min: Kings' begin to take this game over with marc Boudreau forcing Ahier into a solid save.

41min: Karkilins drill a cross past Ahier but by the time Parsley gets to it his angle is horrible and he misses the goal with the shot.

44min: Great chance for Steeves, but Poulton clears, narrowly missing his own net. The corner comes to nothing.

45min: Olaya finds space in the box test Pyne but it doesn't matter because he'd been ruled offside.

Half-time: Solid showing from Kings' so far, who are slowly taking this over. STU had a good last 10 minutes, though, which tends to be a pivotal time. We'll see.

45min: Kings' start the second half with an enthralling back pass.

47min: Kings' win a corner with a shot Ahier tipped over. It pings around the box and Karkilins nearly breaks free, but he can't quite get away.

51min: STU free kick, 30 yards out. Kings' clear it.

52min: GOAL! MacIntyre scores, after coming on at half-time. He streaks onto a ball down the right and strikes a lovely low curler on his second touch. Great goal and a great finish.

54min: GOAL! MacIntyre again! Another ball down the right, and another superb second touch strike, hard across the net and into the side. 3-0. STU bring off Cedric Noel and replace him with Donald Peters.

63min: STU aren't showing much now, and this game is basically over.

69min: Kings' make a change, with Poulton coming off for Downes, who may have come out at half-time. Curci, who came in at half-time for Kovacevic, gets the armband.

71min: Karkilins and Peacock off for Mark Higgins and Boudreau.

75min: MacIntyre drills his hat trick attempt miles wide and high. That was never, ever going in.

76min: Wile is booked for a niggly foul in midfield. Nothing comes of the free kick.

77min: Straatof gest booked for pulling down Olaya, who's not very happy wish the challenge. This is getting a little chippy.

78min: Free kick to STU on the left. La Brech sends it into the wall. The follow-up is unspeakably bad.

79min: MacIntyre pulls through by getting himself booked for a challenge on Olaya that can only be described as senseless. 65 ayrds from goal, near the touchline, and two-footed.

80min: GOAL! Kings' make it 4 with a nice cross from MacIntyre which Higgins heads in.

82min: Olaya lunges into Curci with both feet and from behind. That was pretty malicious, butthe ref shows no card.

86min: Corner to Kings'. It's bananaed in, but Pyne catches it.

90min: GOAL! Steeves is booked for something or other and the resulting free kick finds the head of Curci, who nods it into the top shelf. 5-0.

Full-time: Solid showing from Kings', including from Pyne. Two five goal games in a row and this time, they don't concede. They look like they could take anybody right now.
