As It Happened: UKC Blue Devils (W) v. UNB Saint John Seawolves (W)

By: Dylan Matthias

Hello to all wet Haligonians and all other wet people everywhere. Today, I am one of you. This misty-like rain is covering Wickwire Field. It doesn't make you actively wet, but after thirty minutes, you feel like you're coming out of the shower and you don't dry.

I have head of starting line-ups and I have laughed at them. It would appear as though Sarah Kraus has eaten the line-up sheet, as I can't find them anywhere online. She's been devouring opposing attacks since 2008. I'll be here all night, folks. I've managed to piece together most of King's from recognition or from a list given to me by Jamie Trueland, one of the players. I still don't know who they're goalkeeper is--Bishop is gone. I've tried to contact them and received no response. UNBSJ are completely non-existent. ACAA and CCAA haven't seen fit to post them before the start of the season.

min: King's kick-off in blue vs. UNBSJ in Liverpudlian red.

min: Colleen MacDonald debuts for King's tonight, adding another chapter to one of the greater transfer sagas since Cesc Fabregas sort of not really didn't kind of want to go to Barca. Rumour has it King's have set a record fee for her services, sending the Tigers a bottle of sherry and a copy of Plato's Republic for the centre half.

min: King's win a couple of corners from which much yelling and few chances emerge. The chances of us seeing a vintage King's women mind-numbing 0-0 draw today have increased to 70%.

min: King's lash in a shot off a well-worked free kick. UNBSJ #10 nearly pulls a Carragher and deflects in into her own net. It rolls just wide. Corner.

min: The rain smells distinctly of the Halifax harbour ferries. I don't know what to think of that.

min: King's with 10 or so linked passes which results in a nice shot from Allie Smith, although the 'keeper saves well.

min: Irene Flatley has a low drive turned away and Smith follows up by firing straight through the goalkeeper and out the other side for a corner.

min: The corner is cleared by UNBSJ #10, who does, in fact, bear a passing resemblance to Jamie Carragher, in as much as a 5'8" female ACAA soccer player can.

min: UNBSJ #8 loops a free kick to Kings' new 'keeper from 25 yards out.

min: Smith cuts to the middle before shooting, a hesitation that may have cost her a goal. The 'keeper palms her shot away after getting set.

min: Smith gets in again before taking a heavy touch and gifting the ball to the 'keeper.

min: Flatley breaks in an tests UNBSJ's goalkeeper again. Smith gets the rebound at waist-height and deflects it wide.

min: Flatley cuts past two defenders and shoots low and wide. She should have scored and she knows it.

min: Sarah Wojcik takes a wallop of a tackle just outside the box. The ball falls to Smith, who smashes a cross-goal shot which the 'keeper yet again saves beautifully.

min: Carragher has mis-hit another roller perilously close to her own goal. And, in true Carragher fashion, she looks like she's pulled something in her leg doing it.

min: Smith tests the 'keeper again. Another save.

min: UNBSJ #21 only words this half have been "Oh, shit." Pretty much sums up UNBSJ's half so far, that.

+2min: The level of boredom has reached a dangerous level--I'm now humming Bob Dylan songs in the rain. Kings' #12 (who may be Gillian Clarke, also of Dal, there's no way to be sure right now) misses a chance and the ref blows for half-time.

In truth, King's have run the game and created more chances than I'm really giving them credit for. It's their game to win.

My pages have turned to pulp.

min: Second half's on. I just had a chat with King's president Bill Barker, who's dropped in to watch the team and take some photos.

min: Lucie Edwardson has a lurching shot which misses the goal by some considerable distance.

min: UNBSJ #21 comes forward and fires a shot that could probably be described by "Oh, shit."

min: Edwardson, who's replaced Kelly Cousens, by the way, shoots off of Flatley. UNBSJ's 'keeper saves again.

min: King's #12 steals the ball and puts a shot out for a throw in. I'll be humming Leonard Cohen before long.

min: UNBSJ have come into the second half a bit and are beginning to play it around Kings' goal. Kings' 'keeper, who we do know is called Rebecca, comes to claim a high ball and just beats UNBSJ #15 to it.

min: Edwardson is off, Cousens on.

min: Cousens just fails to pick out a tiring Flatley. Both teams did play yesterday.

min: Marika McKenzie makes a crafty move to a promising position before crossing into touch.

min: UNBSJ handle the ball 30 yards out. Kraus looks for goal and puts it straight at the 'keeper.

min: UNBSJ #10 sprints forward at a very un-Carragher-like pace to reach a ball deep on the right. She then plays it straight into touch.

min: Smith puts a badly angled shot on goal, which the 'keeper fumbles. King's follow up with two more chances, one of which Wojcik really should have scored until she hesitated and tried to pass instead.

min: King's win a corner on an enterprising run from Flatley. It's drilled in and Kings' #12 just misses a near post header.

min: Wojcik gets deep again and zips it back for #12. She's got time and sizes up the shot, but the 'keeper snaffles it safely.

min: King's have a corner, which Kraus will deliver. McKenzie gets a glance of a head on it, but not enough to direct it.

min: UNBSJ #6 flattens Flatley out wide and is given priority spacing in the ref's book for it.

min: King's have been attacking hard for the last few minutes. McKenzie has an optimistic go from 35 yards and nearly scores.

min: King's have 10 players high for a corner. It's a poor delivery, but they keep possession. A Kraus shot is blocked, UNBSJ clear, and full-time is called.

I'm off to cover the men's game while humming John Denver. Toodles.
